Teacher Training Days

Most Warwickshire schools have five teacher training days each year. Pupils do not attend school on these days.

Warwickshire County Council sets two of them:

  • 2026/27: 1 September 2026 and 4 January 2027
  • 2027/28: 1 September 2027 and 5 January 2028

The remaining three teacher training days are set by individual schools. Academies, foundation schools, aided schools, free schools, and independent schools set all their own training days.

Always check your school’s website or ask the headteacher for their specific dates.

FAQs

How many school days are there in a Warwickshire school year?

195 days. That includes five teacher training days when pupils do not attend.

Do academies in Warwickshire follow the same term dates as council schools?

Not always. Academies, foundation schools, and aided schools set their own dates, but they work with the council to keep them as similar as possible.

Can a headteacher approve holiday leave during term time?

No. Headteachers can only approve leave for exceptional circumstances – never for family holidays.

Does religious absence count as authorised school absence?

Yes. Schools must authorise absence for religious observance if the day is set apart by your religious body. Tell the headteacher in advance.

Where can I see live school closures in Warwickshire?

Check your school’s website first. Warwickshire County Council also publishes a list of closed schools, though updates may be delayed during severe weather.
