INSET Days & Teacher Training in Wakefield

Each school in Wakefield is allowed to set five INSET days each year. These are Teacher training days when school staff are present for training and planning, but children do not attend. Unlike the standard school calendar, the dates of these school closures are set individually by each school’s governing body. They must notify parents as soon as dates are confirmed.

Election Day & School Closures

Some Wakefield schools may be used as polling stations on Election Day. If a school is used for voting, it must be closed to students unless given explicit permission by the Returning Officer to remain open. If the school is closed, this typically serves as an additional INSET day. Schools not used for polling may choose a different day for their training.

School Holiday Activities & Support

The school breaks offer more than just time off. Wakefield Council’s Happy Healthy Holidays WF programme provides free activities and food for children and young people who receive benefits-related free school meals. Holiday activities and childcare options are also available for many families across the district.

FAQs

Do all Wakefield schools follow the same holiday dates?

No, some Voluntary Aided schools and academies can set their own term and holiday dates. Always contact your child’s school directly for confirmation.

What are INSET days in Wakefield schools?

INSET days are teacher-training days when children do not attend school. Each school sets five of these days per year, and dates vary by school.

What happens if a school is used as a polling station?

If a school is used as a polling station and cannot remain open, it will close for an INSET day or alternative day.

Can schools change their term dates after they’ve been published?

Yes, schools can adjust their dates, particularly for INSET days. While the main term and holiday dates are usually fixed well in advance, individual schools may make changes due to unforeseen circumstances or training requirements.
